After looking back through memories of the past year and looking forward to special moments, plans, goals and dreams for the New Year, remember to take a deep breath.

Breathe, then completely let go of what was not meant to be this past year—mistakes made, relationships that have ended, or decisions that caused unfavorable results.

Take a deep breath to feel invigorated about a new chance to start fresh, to wipe the slate clean and start over again— to go places you’ve never been or dare yourself to try something new and make life and the New Year more fun, memorable and meaningful.

It’s easy to forget the power of taking a deep breath before facing some of life’s nerve-wracking moments— expressing an opinion, speaking in front of a big crowd, taking your final exams, going on your first date, having a tooth extracted, or interviewing for a job while facing a panel including the top management team at the company you’ve always wanted to work for.

I’m aware that taking a deep breath before every action you take does not always fully guarantee a 100% chance of success. You might achieve the outcome you want and then again, you might not.

What I do know is taking a deep breath before taking action increases your chances of a positive outcome because your mind and body reacts more favorably and performs better when you’re calm and in the moment. You increase your chances of feeling more determined, hopeful, forgiving, accepting, compassionate, or relieved.

According to The Chopra Center’s article, Breathing for Life: The Mind-Body Healing Benefits of Pranayama, “Deep breathing stimulates the main nerve in the parasympathetic nervous system—the vagus nerve—slowing down your heart rate, lowering your blood pressure, and calming your body and mind.”

One of the best Christmas presents I received was my very own smartwatch. It came with a lot of features but the one I like using the most is the Breathe app. It’s amazing how a simple reminder to breathe every hour on the hour for a short one-minute session makes me feel more alive, focused and mindful. For me, it helps clear and cleanse my mind so I can continue with my day feeling refreshed.

To stay healthy, be more patient, discover opportunities for professional growth, and to always nurture home and family life. These are my highest priorities for this year. I took a great big breath at the stroke of midnight as it signaled the first day of 2017. With or without a healthy reminder from my smartwatch, I’ll always make it a point to take deep breaths and make this the best year ever.
